Emma Young Park

Emma Young Park and Ericksen Community Center
Emma Young was a socialite married to W.J. Young, a Clinton lumber baron and industrialist, at the turn of twentieth century.  With the funds from the Emma Young trust fund, park grounds and building materials were purchased.  Emma Young Park is located at 11th Avenue North and 14th Street, Clinton, Iowa. The late Helen Thompson Ericksen, a lifelong Clinton resident and member of the Clinton Recreation Commission, donated a portion of her estate to establish a children's center.  Her contributions provided the interior elements including the beautiful terrazo floors in the main entrance.  In 1969, construction began on a 25,160 square foot building, which eventually was named the Ericksen Community Center.  A formal dedication ceremony was conducted on Sunday, June 28, 1970. The Ericksen Community Center is located, at 1401 11th Avenue North, in Emma Young Park.Emma Young Sign - Copy (2)

Clinton Parks & Recreation is planning a full overhaul to the Emma Young Pond later this Fall.  The City of Clinton was awarded a grant from the Iowa DNR’s Resource Enhancement And Protection program that will pay for almost the entirety of the project.

Plans include dredging the existing pond to a depth of approximately 10’ in its deepest areas and adding a siltation pond just ahead of the main pond area.  Plans also include re-building the fishing pier, adding a kayak and canoe launch, adding aerating fountains, and finally re-stocking the pond with fish with assistance from the DNR.

This project will continue through the Winter and Spring and the City is hopeful for completion by Summer 2022.
